Vein Alert: How to Avoid Weight Gain This Thanksgiving
- Posted on: Nov 15 2018
One of the best ways to naturally alleviate symptoms caused by varicose veins is to maintain a healthy weight, but as everyone knows, with the start of the holiday season, it can be harder than ever to keep off added weight. Even though this list from us at Vein Center Houston isn’t exactly foolproof, it will hopefully prevent you from gaining some excess weight this season.
Watch the Saturated Fats
Saturated fats are in things like butter and gravy; two things that are hard to avoid on Thanksgiving. Instead of adding gravy and butter to your meal, try to avoid them and instead either eat things plane or you can always add jam to your bread or cranberry sauce to your turkey instead.
Watch The Carbs
One of the hardest things to watch on Thanksgiving and around the holidays is your carbohydrate intake. With mashed potatoes, bread rolls, and pie being at the forefront of most people’s minds, it can be hard to imagine a carbohydrate-light Thanksgiving holiday. But the good news is that there are plenty of alternative Thanksgiving foods that you can eat instead like turkey, green beans, sweet potatoes (even though they are technically a carb), carrots, and green salad.
Go For Walks
You don’t have to join your local Thanksgiving 5k to burn off extra calories (even though it is a good idea), you can always just get your family out of the house before and after dinner to go for a long walk. Getting your heart rate up and your body moving is a great way to burn extra calories and get rid of fat. Plus, exercise will help increase the blood flow to and from your veins which can also prevent against vein conditions.
Excess weight and fat on your body can make your veins more bothersome, noticeable, and painful. Use these tips this Thanksgiving to avoid gaining extra weight.
