Simple things you can do to improve the health of your veins

So many people are focused on their heart and lungs when it comes to improving their health, but did you know there are many simple things you can do to improve the health of your veins? Improving vein health supports your overall health and reduces your risk for vascular problems.

Exercise, exercise, exercise. Sitting or standing for long periods of time can wreak havoc on your health, and especially your vein health, causing poor circulation. Physical exercise helps stimulate circulation, which helps move blood up from your lower body back to your heart. If you’re sitting or standing, change posture or position. Take a 30-minute walk, five days a week and you’ll reap many health benefits in addition to improved vein health.

Eat a healthy diet. Good nutrition is key to your health, and there are several foods that can help improve blood flow. Salmon, oranges, beets, peppers and radishes are just some of the foods that can help with blood flow.

Watch the salt and your weight. Try to reduce the amount of salt you consume as it can lead to swelling. If you are overweight or obese, ask your doctor for ideas on how to shed the weight and the pounds that can put pressure on your veins.

Wear compression stockings. Compression stockings are extra tight socks or hosiery that put pressure on the veins in your lower legs to squeeze blood out of your calves and back up your legs to your heart.

Elevate your legs. Try to find 10 or 15 minutes each day to elevate your legs above the level of your heart. This helps excess blood drain out of the lower legs and move back up to the heart. Lie down and put a few pillows below your legs to elevate them above the heart.
