Men Get Varicose Veins Too

Vein Treatment Houston, TXWhile varicose veins are a much more common condition in women, men can also struggle with them too. Because vein issues seem like a less frequent issue for men, they may put off treatment or not recognize that varicose veins are beginning to form. Here are some things to look for when it comes to varicose veins as well as ways to prevent them.

Signs and Symptoms of Varicose Veins

You may have varicose veins and not notice any unusual pain or symptoms. Some signs that you may have varicose veins are that you start to see dark purple or blue veins that appear twisted and almost cord-like.

Some painful signs and symptoms to look out for may include:

  • An achy or heavy feeling in your legs
  • Burning, throbbing, muscle cramping and swelling in your lower legs
  • Increase in pain after sitting or standing for a long time
  • Itchiness around one or more of your veins
  • Changing in skin coloring around a varicose vein

How to Prevent Varicose Veins

It can be difficult to completely prevent varicose veins, but there are some ways to limit the risk of developing them in the first place or additional ones. Here are some lifestyle suggestions to help you eliminate the risk of incurring more varicose veins:

  • Exercise
  • Watch your weight
  • Eat a high-fiber, low-salt diet
  • Avoid high heels and tight hosiery
  • Elevate your legs
  • Change your sitting or standing position regularly

If you do experience the above signs and symptoms and are in pain, don’t worry, there are treatment options available. We’d start with a vein screening to determine the level of severity in your veins. If you do need treatment, you have options there. From sclerotherapy that involves a chemical being injected into your veins to less invasive laser treatments. In more severe cases you may need to opt for surgical procedures, but we can determine that later down the road.

If you or someone you know is having vein-related issues, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’d love to schedule a consultation with you. Call us at 713.349.8346 (VEIN) today.
