How to Stay Active This Summer

Rather than spending the hot summer days indoors on the couch watching TV, make this the summer where you resolute to be a little bit more active. With obesity being one of the leading causes of varicose veins, losing weight can prevent you from getting new ones in the future and may lessen your symptoms. Also, exercise is a great way to speed up your blood circulation to your veins as well. But before you jump into things and start training for a half marathon, we have a few baby steps for you to take to get outside and get more active.

Try Some Fun, New Hikes

We may not have huge mountains in Houston, but that doesn’t mean that we have a shortage of hikes. Try going on a new adventure and head to Memorial park or Houston Arboretum and Nature Center. Getting out in nature isn’t just good for your veins, but it can be good for your mental health as well.

Track your Steps

If you don’t have a fitness tracking watch yet, then now is the time to get one. Whether you choose a Fit-Bit, an Apple watch, or another brand, these watches are great because they will help you set and make goals every day. Plus, these watches have little alert sensors in them that will go off every now and again to remind you to get up and move around.

Go for a Swim

Rather than just laying out by the swimming pool, get in the water this year and swim some laps. Lap swimming is excellent for strengthening your muscles, is easy on your joints and is a good way to get your blood circulating. If you have never swum laps before, then consider getting a kickboard and practice your kicking back and forth; this is still a really good workout.
