HOUSTON , Texas— (Business Wire)– November 17, 2004 —Vein Center Houston publicly announced today its most recent recognition at the 19 th Annual Design Awards, sponsored by Modern Healthcare and the American Institute of Architects’ Academy of Architecture for Health. This year, for the first time, non-healthcare architects Carol Bentel, David Brems and Louis Pounders were invited to sit on the nine-member judging panel, organized by Modern Healthcare. While the healthcare architects focused on flexibility, functionality and attention to patient care, the non-healthcare architects felt strongly about aesthetics and the current trends in sustainability, which concentrates on environmentally friendly designs.

In April of this last year, Vein Center Houston received one of the most prestigious architectural awards from the American Institute of Architecture for its architectural creativity, transformation and overall conversion from a storefront setting to its new use as a medical facility. It received its most recent recognition in part due to its attention to customer care, in not just the lobby and waiting areas, but more significantly, in patient-care areas. It was also acknowledged on planning beyond the immediate problem to anticipate future needs and for being on the leading edge of science and healthcare architecture.

“It is with true elation, that I can speak with gratitude regarding the recognition we continue to receive on our facility, said, Mario Kapusta , M.D. , Vein Center Houston founder. “We hope to become an influence across the industry among patients and doctors, alike,” he added.

Design excellence, functional utility, responsiveness to patient and family needs, and flexibility of design were the four main criteria utilized in the judging of the show. Only four percent of the entire 189 entries received recognition.
