Tis the Season for IPL Photofacial

IPL Photo facialThe holiday season is in full swing. Between all the holiday parties, family gatherings, gift shopping, and other festivities don’t you think you deserve a treat for yourself? Enter IPL. Learn about this treatment and how it can help your skin glow.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL treatment may also be referred to as a photofacial because of the light used in the treatment. IPL works by sending multiple wavelengths of light. These waves pass through the epidermis to get to the pigment-producing cells which are where spots and other concerns start. When the light is absorbed by the pigment below the skin, the discolorations are then drawn up to the surface where they can flake off.

This nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure is performed in the office setting as a treatment for skin discoloration, rosacea, and other cosmetic problems that tend to develop on areas of skin that are exposed to the sun.

Who is an Ideal Candidate For IPL Photofacial?

Ideal candidates for IPL photofacials are adults with light to medium-complected skin who have visible sun damage. Sun damage, or photoaging, can be seen in a number of ways. Some signs that you might be a good candidate for IPL treatment include:

  • Gray, brown, or black, flat spots on your skin
  • Irregular skin coloring
  • Blotchy skin caused by dilated capillaries
  • Loose, sagging skin caused by the degradation of collagen and elastin

What are the Benefits Of IPL Photofacial?

IPL treatments are great because they are convenient and don’t require a lot of downtime for recovery. IPL is extremely safe, having been through extensive clinical testing. It also provides the cosmetic benefits of brighter, smoother, younger-looking skin. The wavelengths used in IPL treatment are also effective at targeting the bacteria that cause breakouts, meaning IPL can both decrease visible scars and also prevent future acne flareups.
