The certification process involves evaluation of the physician’s training, experience, medical education, ultrasound knowledge and peer recommendations. If qualified, the physician is allowed to seat for a multiple choice examination. Only 276 physicians were considered for the examination. The first examination was administered in May 2008. By successfully passing the examination the physician is considered “Board Certified in Phlebology”. Patients may now ask their practitioner whether they are “Board Certified” in the specialty. In 2005, the American Medical Association recognized Phlebology as a specialty. The American College of Phlebology and the American Board of Phlebology work to improve the practice of Phlebology by improving the standards of medical practitioners and the quality of patient care. Continuous Medical Education and the establishment of standards for practice are just two of the ways to achieve these goals.Doctors who are “Board Certified” are considered the best in their field. The ABPh will also require re-certification by testing and demonstration of continuing education.
