Let’s Talk Spider Veins

Here at Vein Center Houston, we treat more than just varicose veins. In fact, we treat patients with a variety of different vein issues including spider veins. So, what are spider veins and how can we at Vein Center Houston treat them? Let’s take a closer look.
What Are Spider Veins?
Unlike varicose veins that are large and typically purple, spider veins are small thin, thread-like veins that can be purple, blue, or red. And because they are usually in a spiderweb pattern, that’s where they get their name. Caused by a variety of things including hormones, spider veins can be uncomfortable and even painful at times. And, unlike varicose veins that are primarily present in the legs and feet, spider veins are also common on the face— making them a little more noticeable than other types of conditions.
How Are They Treated?
One of the ways that we at Vein Center Houston treat people with spider veins is through a treatment called sclerotherapy. During this non-invasive procedure, we will inject a solution— typically saline based— directly into your spider veins. Once your veins have been injected, the solution should weaken them and cause them to close off and become naturally absorbed by your body.
Although sclerotherapy is a great spider vein treatment option, it is not used as a preventative treatment.
How Are They Prevented?
Similar to patients who have varicose veins, we encourage our patients with spider veins to use preventative measures such as losing weight, wearing flat shoes, wearing compression stockings, and exercising regularly.
